How To Baby Proof Your Car

There is a long list of things to do to get ready for a new baby. In addition to packing your hospital bag and sticking plastic covers on all of your outlets, you’ll want to set aside some time to properly baby proof your car. You and your little one will be spending quite a bit of time in the car, and ensuring that it’s safe and comfortable for them will definitely give you some peace of mind. Check out our how-to guide on baby proofing your car!

Car Seat Check

The very first thing you’ll want to do is get your car seat all set up. Follow the instructions that come with the car seat to ensure that it’s installed properly. For a newborn, you’ll want to set up the car seat rear-facing. If you’re unsure how to install it on your own, consider asking a friend who’s an experienced parent for a helping hand. You can also ask someone to give your car seat a once over before you leave the hospital, so take advantage of that!

You’ll also want to grab a seat belt buckle cover so that when your little one gets old enough to press the release button, it’s inaccessible to ensure they stay safe and secure while in the car. You don’t want to find yourself driving your car and suddenly find your little one unbuckled and is exploring the back of the car. Keep your baby safe and give yourself some peace of mind with a simple seat belt buckle cover!

Prep With the Basics

Once you have the car seat set ready to go, make sure you have the right basics to keep your baby safe and happy. Disable the window locks and child locks in your car so that there aren’t any unwanted surprises as you drive. You might also consider installing some sun shades to keep your baby protected from the sun, as well as a rear-facing mirror so that you can safely keep an eye on your little one as you drive.

Be Well Stocked

You never know what you’ll need while on the go with your baby. What if your little one has a blowout and needs a new outfit? Need to squeeze in a quick feeding? What about when you run out of diapers in your diaper bag and you’re in desperate need of supplies for a diaper change? Properly stock up your car so that you never find yourself without the supplies you need.

Consider investing in a backseat organizer to hold all of your diapers, wipes, spare outfits, bottles, formula, pacifiers, and anything else you might need while on the go. The great thing about these backseat organizers is that their use transitions as your child grows- easily swap out the formula for fruit snacks, bottles for sippies, and pacifiers for toys as your baby grows into a toddler.
