With the arrival of summertime come concerns about how to protect our skin. This concern goes doubly so for people who have small children and babies.

High noon is not the only time to avoid taking a baby out into the sun. More specifically, a baby should not be out in the sun between the hours of 10 AM and 2 PM to avoid maximum sun exposure.
There are necessary precautions to take if going out during these hours is a must. Be sure the baby is covered with some sort of light blanket and that they are dressed in light fabrics in soft colors, too. Long sleeve shirts that are lightweight are a great idea, and the same can be said of pants, too.
Holding an umbrella over the baby would be a great idea, but placing a cap that has some sort of shade for the face is an even better idea. There is also the option of apply baby-friendly sunscreen. They should be below the SPF 15 range, though, or else they can actually entice burns to happen because of the extra oils it places on the skin.
In some cultures, it is customary to pile clothes onto a baby. However, such a thing does not and should not be the case. Too many layers can make the outfit heavy, which will either overheat or dehydrate the baby in the long run.
If longer sleeves and longer pants are used, then they should be made of cotton or another breathable fabric that is lightweight. A good rule of thumb is to dress your baby the same way that you would dress yourself. If you are overheated, then there is a good chance that your baby is, too, if they are dressed in a similar fashion.

The same also applies to stroller composition. A stroller can contain heat rather quickly, so making sure to provide as much ventilation as possible is essential to a baby's health. Fancier strollers usually do not provide the proper ventilation needed for a baby.
Those strollers that are made of nylon are the best idea because they offer the most breathability. It is important to note that strollers can heat up as fast as a car sometimes, so it is extremely important that ventilation is provided as soon and as often as possible.
Know the Signs to Look For
Many parents do not realize that babies do not have fully developed sweat glands, so there really is not a way to know if a baby is suffering or not. If a baby becomes too warm, they might show these signs:
- Checking for dry skin or skin that is no longer elastic.
- Clean diapers over a long period of time.
- Not feeling like playing or otherwise being active.
- Refusal to accept milk, which is a huge sign of dehydration.
- Showing signs of lethargy or irritation.
- Signs of being unwell.
If your baby is showing any of these signs, then they should be taken to a doctor right away. These signs mark dehydration, so medical attention is necessary.
Treating a Sunburn in Babies
If sunburn does happen from too much sun exposure, then treating your baby right away is absolutely necessary. A cool, tap-water compress applied to the most affected areas of the body. This should happen for ten to fifteen minutes across at least four different times throughout the day.
